Beads of Courage Workshop

Occasionally, children have to go through long term treatment in a hospital. During these stays, the child patients often have to go through numerous procedures and tests on their way to wellness. To encourage the children during their stays at the hospital, the "Beads Of Courage Foundation" was formed as a means helping the child patient through often protracted treatment processes. The foundation established a program to award the patient a different colored bead for each treatment procedure they receive as a means of encouragement. Various public service organizations began providing means of organizing the collections of beads. Woodworking clubs responded by making turned and dimentional boxes to hold the collections of beads.

GWA has begun "one Thursday a month" working sessions that will be held at Rob Austin's shop from 10:00AM til ? to convert donated wood to turned lidded boxes that are then given to the Beads of Courage representative at the hospital. To facilitate a group effort to create beads of courage boxes, a design involving a bicolor segmented hollow form was agreed to. This allows multiple people to create the components needed, glue them together, and turn them into a finished container that the BOC representative will present to the patient. If you would like to help at the next gathering, just show up at the next session and stay as long as your time permits.
