Hans Meier's "Holeless Salt Shakers"

Start the new year with a project that’s equal parts clever engineering and pure turning fun. At our January 10th meeting, Hans Meier will demonstrate how to create his signature "holeless salt shakers" - a design that looks like magic but is made entirely on the lathe with no kits, hardware, or special inserts.

These shakers are turned from two simple blocks of wood. One becomes a perfectly fitted round box; the other is shaped into an internal "table" with a hidden passage that allows the salt to flow. The result is a fully functional shaker with no visible holes—just clean lines, smooth curves, and a surprising reveal when you open it.

They’re quick to make and fun to experiment with. These shakers can be made from a wide range of hardwood species commonly used for food‑contact items. Hans will discuss wood choices and finishes that hold up well to salt and everyday use. For this demo, Hans will take things up a notch by turning a shaker blank made from 9 pen blanks glued together, creating a striking, unique look you won’t want to miss.

Whether you’re looking for a new gift idea, a conversation piece, or just a project that sparks your imagination, this is a demo you’ll enjoy. Come see how it’s done—and maybe go home inspired to make a few of your own.
