You must use a standard 8 foot long 'store bought' type 2x4 (also known as a tubafor).  If you can buy a purpleheart 2x4 locally then you can use it.  Otherwise, you're probably limited to pine and fir.  You can embellish your project with up to 25% of other stuff, but NOT OTHER WOODS.  Only the wood from the 2x4 can be used.  That means no plywood (unless you've found an 8 foot plywood 2x4).  Categories are different for this challenge.  Since this is the fifth year for our 2x4 Challenge the categories continue to be: Most Imaginative, Most Technically Challenging, and Most Utilitarian (meaning you can actually use the item for what it was designed for).  You still have to declare your category.

Gwinnett Woodworkers Association

TWO BY FOUR CONTEST

Contest Rules

  1. The object of the contest is to see what you can make using one 2 x 4.
  2. Contest is open to all GWA members in good standing.
  3. Multiple entries may be submitted.
  4. Each entry may be submitted in only one of three categories.  The categories will be: Artistic, Technically Challenging, Practical.
  5. Project must be made from a single, 8 foot 2x4 (whatever the industry standard dimensions of that are today).  You must use an actual 2x4.  Any 2x4 you can purchase or find locally.  If you can find a purpleheart 2x4 locally then you can use it.  Otherwise you'll probably end up with pine or fir like everyone else.
  6. A project may consist of more than one part, but only one kind of wood - the 2x4 kind.
  7. Project can be fastened using glue and normal fasteners, and finished using any substance commonly understood to be a wood finish.
  8. Project can also include other materials for decorative or functional purposes but this material should not be the primary focus.  “Other materials” cannot constitute more than 25% of the project.  The project must consist of at least 75% wood.
  9. “Other materials” cannot include a second kind of wood.
  10. Prizes will be awarded for the following:
    1. Peoples Choice Award — If there was only one prize this would be it.
    2. Practical — Items in this category should be something many people would use and the implementation should be capable of reliably being used for that purpose
    3. Technically Challenging — Items entered in this category should exhibit skill and experience applied to a complex or sophisticated design, implementation and finish.
    4. Artistic — Items in this category should exhibit originality and ingenious use of materials, colors, grains, textures, and finishes.
  11. Judging:  Members will be the judges in all categories.  Judging will be done by ballot.  Once a member has won a prize they will no longer be eligible to win a second prize.  The People’s Choice Award will be chosen first, so the member who wins this award will be out of the running for any of the three category awards.  If a member submits multiple items in separate categories and subsequently wins one category they will no longer be eligible to win in any other category.
